Speakers

Søren Hermansen (DK)

‘Community power at work:
from a linear market economy to a circular community economy’

Søren Hermansen has been the driving force behind the transformation of Samsø into a world-famous renewable energy island. Situated in the middle of Denmark, Samsø, an island of 3,800 inhabitants, won a 1997 competition launched by the Danish Ministry of Environment to select Denmark’s Renewable Energy Island. The effort started with Mr Hermansen, a former high school environmental studies teacher, who tirelessly explained the benefits of clean energy to the people in his community during countless town meetings. Within ten years, the island succeeded in becoming 100% self-sufficient through renewable energy and is now exporting its excess wind-powered electricity to the rest of Denmark.

Mr Hermansen is currently director of Samsø Energy Academy, which opened in 2007. The Academy arranges yearly exhibitions, workshops and corporate events, which regularly attract 6,000 politicians, journalists, and students from around the world. Researchers from both Danish and foreign educational institutions can conduct energy research at the Academy, and island residents can get free advice on sustainable solutions.

For his innovative work, Mr Hermansen was named one of the “Heroes of the Environment” by Time Magazine, and he was awarded the Gothenburg Award in 2009, which some call the Nobel prize for the Environment.

Søren Hermansen volt a hajtóereje Samsø világhírű megújuló energia szigetté való átalakításának. A Dánia közepén fekvő, 3800 lakosú Samsø 1997-ben megnyerte a Dán Környezetvédelmi Minisztérium által kiírt pályázatot Dánia megújuló energia szigetének kiválasztására. A projekt vezetője Søren Hermansen, az egykori középiskolai környezetismeret tanár volt, aki lakossági gyűlések sokaságán, fáradhatatlanul magyarázta közössége tagjainak a megújuló energiaforrások előnyeit. Tíz éven belül a szigetnek sikerült 100%-ban önellátóvá válnia a megújuló energiaforrások terén, mára pedig már a szélerőművek által termelt elektromosenergia-felesleget exportálja Dánia többi részébe.

Søren Hermansen jelenleg a 2007-ben megnyílt Samsøi Energia Akadémia igazgatója.

Viktoria Walldin (SE)

How to move a city?

Viktoria Walldin is a prominent social anthropologist of the built environment in Sweden. In 2014, Viktoria was awarded for her efforts with the prestigious Sweden Green Building Awards for positive contributions to sustainable urban development. She is a partner at White Arkitekter and leads the social and cultural sustainability team. Viktoria received her master’s degree in Social Anthropology from Stockholm University and has since specialised in environmental psychology and the social dimension of the regeneration of places. She has vast experience in working with ethnographic methods such as observations, interviewing and place analyses. Her own method of working is based on communication, often through outreach, with residents and users of urban environments. By collecting and analysing data of their experiences, values and behaviours, she widens the understanding of their needs. Allowing this understanding to inform the planning process is essential in delivering socially sustainable architecture. On many major regeneration projects, Viktoria has been a key contributor in Sweden and abroad. Projects at White include the relocation of the City of Kiruna in northern Sweden and the design of a development plan for an industrial estate in Nairobi, Kenya. She has also served as an advisor to the Norwegian Ministry of Climate and Environment, contributing expertise on social aspects of urban development. Additionally, Viktoria has also had an advisory role in Sweden’s Ministry of Enterprise and Innovation, the government organisation for municipal planning for housing.

Viktoria Walldin ismert svéd szociálantropológus, szakterülete az épített környezet. A fenntartható városfejlesztéshez való hozzájárulásáért 2014-ben elnyerte a rangos Sweden Green Building Awards díjat.

Unnur Anna Valdimarsdóttir (IS)

Health challenges in Nordic welfare states

Population health in the Nordic countries benefits from the state funded welfare systems with health care, education, and social security available to all citizens yielding societal equity.  Yet, several challenges remain as threats to population health in the Nordic countries as well as in other societies globally. Along with the rapid aging of the population, the focus has recently been directed to the impact of societal and individual-level trauma and other stressful events, such as violence, war migration as well as the recent global pandemic, with considerable impact on mental and physical health.  The lecture will provide an overview of these challenges with examples of studies in the Nordic countries that illustrate the scope and health consequences of these.

Unnur Anna Valdimarsdóttir is a professor of epidemiology at the University of Iceland, and guest professor at Karolinska Institutet and Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health.  Her research focuses on the impact of trauma and stressful life events on health.

Tapani Jokinen (FIN)

‘Nordic Design shaping a sustainable future’

Tapani Jokinen is an industrial designer working at the intersection of circular economy, systems, foresight, and design. He looks back at more than 25 years of extensive design experience in various capacities and global locations. In his daily work, Tapani helps teams and businesses to become more resilient by applying circular design principles in order to make their future business, products, and services more sustainable.

Besides his work as a design consultant at the Fraunhofer IZM, an applied research institute for systems and electronics, he is the founder of TJ Design, a creative consulting firm that fuses strategic innovation and design with sustainability business practices. He was Head of Design Portfolio and Strategy at Microsoft / Nokia, and the initial designer behind the iconic Nokia 3310.

“80% of environmental pollution and 90% of manufacturing costs are the results of decisions taken at the product design stage. That is why Circular design will play a crucial role in creating this transition. Circular Economy is systemic change it fundamentally changes how businesses are made today it is an overhaul of how products and services are designed, manufactured, sold, maintained, refurbished, and recycled. Our common challenge of how design should change to satisfy and manage major distributive changes for good is about making life better for the next generation.”

Pont emiatt játszik a körkörös design döntő szerepet a fenntartható termelésre való átállás folyamatában.
